Hooray for a Half Marthon!

by admin

Half Marathons are the fastest growing race distance around.  13.1 mile races are popping up on race calendars like petunias in the Spring.  So when we created a race series that progresses perfectly to train for the 13.1 distance, we had to add it.  As of this week, we are so happy to announce that we are adding a half marathon distance as the fourth event in our race series.

Perfect Running Form

by admin

by Rhielle Widders

When talking about running barefoot last week, I only mentioned stride mechanics but that is not the hot topic surrounding barefoot running.  Instead, barefoot runners everywhere are preaching a change in running form.  They claim that the change prevents them from experiencing overuse injuries and provides them with faster times.  If those promises were guaranteed after untying my laces and kicking my shoes off, I would be the first on that train. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.  The good news is that you can make all those changes to form without buying new shoes or taking them off.

Stride Mechanics

by admin

by: Rhielle Widders

If you are a runner, and even if you aren’t, you are probably aware of the discussion surrounding barefoot running.  It will make you stronger, you will get fewer injuries, your stride will change, you will run more efficiently, the list goes on.  I’m not opposed to running barefoot, I did it at the end of practice every day in high school and college (weather permitting, of course).  What I am opposed to, however, is people thinking that barefoot running will solve all of their running problems.  That is why this week’s running topic is Stride Mechanics.  Let’s chat about what makes a faster, more efficient runner, who ends up with fewer injuries regardless of what he/she wears on his/her feet.

Stride Length x Cadence = Pace

This formula may seem rudimentary but it really is that basic.  You can only vary two things in order to change your pace: how quickly you can rotate your legs and how much ground you cover while you are rotating them.  Still don’t believe me?  Go through the two variables independently.

A: Think about running up and down the stairs at your local high school bleachers.  The stride length is staying the same but the cadence is changing; going up, cadence decreases due to the fight with gravity but coming down, the cadence increases in proportion to the pace. read more…

Get Lost!

by admin

We posted about trail running over here today.  It is a little post with some great photos featuring a beginner trail in Park City, UT.  Just in case you need a little preview:

In my opinion, trail running is the purest form of running.  The surroundings keep you so entertained that you don’t need any music. The rocks, tree roots, and other obstacles keep you on your toes.

How I Quit Smoking and Returned to Running
by Doug Mackay

Although I was a cross-country runner in high school, by age 38 I couldn’t run a mile.  Not to mention I was prone to illness, looked unhealthy, and everything around me reeked of smoke.  While I found little pleasure in cigarettes, every attempt to quit ended in failure.
Taking up the Challenge
During the spring of 2003, my best friends were expecting their first child.  I decided to mark the birth of their son as the catalyst to quit smoking. Making this known to my non-smoking friends gave me focus.  Having found the impetus for quitting, I still needed to unravel the physical, psychological and emotional entanglements of my addiction.  My strategy to deal with the physical addiction was to use nicotine gum, but the more difficult task would be the social and psychological aspects. For this I had to make a tough, but necessary decision. That decision was to avoid anyone who smoked. Sadly this included friends I’d known my entire life.
Lastly I‘d have to deal with the emotional dependency and stress.  Having recently lost my job I chose to confront the stress head-on.  With my plan in place I began the journey to get healthy.  The nicotine gum helped me with the physical withdrawal, but the slightest hint of boredom had me scrambling to fill the void.  Despite my best efforts to stay busy, I ate a lot more food and I gained 15 pounds in less than a year! Not great, but I wasn’t smoking. read more…
