Runner’s Checklist

One of the best parts about running is that you can do it out of your front door and the equipment is pretty inexpensive (especially compared to similar individual sports such as cycling or triathlon).  Below, you can find a list of the beginner’s essentials so every stride is done with comfort.

Running Shoes:
This is the most essential piece of equipment for runners and you will probably spend the most money and time on this item.  There are different shoes for different runners.  For tips on picking out the best shoe for you, check out the article, Picking Your Shoes.

Technical Apparel:
Although the word ‘technical’ is usually associated with computers and complexity, running with the right clothing on can actually simplify your running experience.  When choosing running clothes, the #1 rule is: ABSOLUTELY NO COTTON.  Cotton absorbs more sweat than any other fabric or material.  This has two results.  The most obvious consequence is the increased chance for chaffing or blistering.  The less obvious consequence is the bodies inability to regulate its temperature- similar to walking outside with wet hair or getting out of a swimming pool.  When you are covered in water, your body gets drained of all of its heat quickly.  This seems like it may be great in the summer, but in reality, it just feels muggy and humid.  In the winter, it means shivers and cold.  If you are looking to be more eco-friendly with your clothing purchases, try apparel made with bamboo or merino wool (this stuff isn’t itcy and is washer/dryer friendly).

Running Socks:
Blisters are no fun and can often be prevented by choosing shoes that fit well.  However, if your socks are cotton, your chance for blisters goes way up.  In order to prevent this from happening, choose socks that are made materials other than cotton.  The investment is more expensive up front, but you will find that the synthetic materials are much more durable and your socks will often last you several years.

Running ID:
Most of us leave home without any kind of identification on our person.  Although running is generally a very safe sport, each year there are reports of people who are hit by cars while running without any identification.  Trust me, you will be better off with some ID.  There are several sites on the web that will print a customized bracelet or tag for you.

Bodyglide:
Chaffing is a normal part of our sport.  When two body parts rub together, skin gets rubbed off and creates a very uncomfortable situation.  Bodyglide is a skin protector that is rubbed on much like deoderant.  Once it is applied, the two body parts rub without friction, keeping your skin pain-free.

Waterbelt/bottle:
Hydration is one of the most ignored elements of running amongst beginners.  Finding a watter belt or handheld bottle that is comfortable will save hours of stashing water in bushes along your route before you head out for your run.

Sports Bra (for the ladies):
A supportive bra, designed for high impact sports bra is the most important piece of equipment, after your shoes, and can become your favorite piece of equipment.  Make sure you are measured for the bra at a reputable store and then pick a bra that is designed for your size.  Moving Comfort and Saucony are two brands that make reliable bras designed for the high impact of running.
